Icy conditions caused several multi-vehicle car wrecks in our area on Sunday. Three people were killed as a result of two of these chain reaction accidents. A 31 year old Philadelphia man was fatally struck in a 60 car pileup on the Schuylkill Expressway after exiting his disabled vehicle. The pileup left more than 30 people injured, and buses were brought in to take victims to area hospitals.
At roughly the same time, a multi-vehicle pileup on the Blue Route in Broomall, Delaware County claimed the lives of two men. The Blue Route accident involved 11 vehicles, including a tractor trailer. A Lansdale man and a Delaware man were pronounced dead at the scene. Four other people were injured in the pileup.
Numerous motor vehicle accidents occurred throughout the Philadelphia region as a result of the icy conditions Sunday morning prompting officials to temporarily close area bridges including the Betsy Ross, Walt Whitman, Ben Franklin, Tacony Palmyra, Burlington-Bristol, Commodore Barry bridges. A PennDOT spokesperson said that the accidents were the result flash freezing, which occurs when rain hits frozen ground and immediately freezes.
