The U.S. Transportation Department has announced that 99% of all new cars will be equipped with automatic emergency braking systems by September 2022. Twenty auto manufacturers have agreed to make emergency brake systems a standard feature on all new models beginning in 2022. Automatic emergency braking technology is currently available as an added option on some vehicles. The systems employ radars, cameras and lasers to detect the proximity and speed of an object in a vehicle’s path and will automatically engage the brakes as necessary to prevent or reduce the impact of a collision. Safety experts believe automatic braking systems could prevent thousands of car accidents each year.
