A tanker truck carrying almost 9,000 gallons of gasoline exploded on Route 130 in Pennsauken, New Jersey late Monday morning. Thick black smoke from the burning fuel could be seen miles away in Cherry Hill and throughout South Jersey. Officials do not know yet what caused the tanker truck accident. The driver of the truck was rescued from the burning tanker and was not injured in the fiery crash.
Route 130, Route 90, and the Betsy Ross Bridge into Philadelphia were closed as the fire continued to burn after the explosion. Nearby homes were evacuated, and health officials are warning people in the area that fumes and smoke inhalation from fuel fires is extremely dangerous. Smoke from the fire could irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. It can also cause breathing difficulty and lead to chronic health problems.
