Google’s new speed update algorithm will take effect this July
Beginning in July of 2018, Google page speed will become a major ranking factor for mobile searches. Although page speed has been a Google ranking factor since 2009, it was never officially a consideration for mobile.
The speed update is supposed to affect only those pages that deliver the slowest experience to users, and it should only affect a small percentage of queries. The intent of the search query is a very strong signal, so, if a page contains informative, relevant content, it may still rank. The speed update will apply the same standard to all pages, regardless of the technology that was used to build the page.
Google is encouraging developers to think broadly about how performance affects a user’s experience of their page, and to consider a variety of user experience metrics.
