Amtrak service resumed today between Philadelphia and New York after a train derailment in Philadelphia last week left eight people dead and over 200 injured. Investigators discovered that the train had been travelling at speeds over 100 miles per hour around a curve when the accident occurred. Amtrak announced over the weekend that it would be expanding the use of an automatic speed restriction system in compliance with orders issued by the Federal Railroad Administration. The automatic system warns an engineer if a train is travelling over the speed limit and will automatically slow a train if an engineer fails to apply the brakes. The speed restriction system, which was already in use for southbound trains travelling through Philadelphia, will now be used on northbound trains as well.
