SEM Specialists at Premier Legal Marketing Discuss New “Ban the Box” Employment Law in New Jersey

New Jersey’s new “ban the box” employment law, approved in August, took effect on March 1.  Under the new law, employers with 15 or more workers cannot inquire about an applicant’s criminal record until after an initial interview.  The new employment law is expected to open doors for many people who have made mistakes in the past, but have since turned their lives around.  Job applications in New Jersey will no longer require applicants to check a box if they have been convicted of a crime.  Employers who violate the “ban the box” law will be fined $1,000 for a first offense, $5,000 for a second offense, and $10,000 for each subsequent offense.
