December 1-5th is Older Driver Safety Awareness Week. The week highlights the sensory, cognitive and physical changes that some older adults experience as part of the aging process, and how they can impact safe driving. Advocates from the American Occupational Therapy Association stress the importance of noting how these changes may effect an individuals ability to drive and offer suggestions and modifications for those who need them. The organization suggests a driving fitness screening be done in conjunction with an qualified Occupational Therapist, who specializes in driving rehabilitation. This evaluation may identify a drivers unique challenges and help the anxious driver find modifications that significantly improve their confidence and safety.
