April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and New Jersey police officers will be cracking down on cell phone use while driving. As part of the nationwide “U Text, U Drive, U Pay” distracted driving awareness campaign, 38 law enforcement agencies in New Jersey have received grants of $5,000 each to increase patrols in April aimed at catching and stopping people who are on their phones and texting while driving. Many people believe that hands-free devices offer a safe alternative; however, studies have shown that driving while talking over Bluetooth or other hands-free devices still creates a significant distraction to a driver. Hands-free phone conversations cause drivers to be mentally distracted. While focusing on a conversation, a driver using a hands-free device can miss up to half of what’s happening on the road including stop signs, traffic lights, and pedestrians.
