NBC News reports that there are various cases of goalkeepers developing non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer that develops in the lymphatic system that is designed to help the body fight disease.
Turf fields have emerged all across America. The artificial turf is comprised of old tires often visibly present in the form of small black rubber pieces. The “tire crumbs” contain known carcinogens and toxins that may be exposing players to potentially cancer causing materials. Goalies may be most at risk from the toxic material in the turf due to the nature of the position in which they are in constant contact with the artificial field and breathing in the toxins when making plays.
